In ancient China, it was believed a celestial dragon attacked and devoured the Sun during an eclipse. People used drums and loud noises to scare the dragon and make it release the Sun.
In Hindu tradition, Rahu, a demon, attempted to swallow the Sun and Moon out of revenge. In Korea, mythical dogs were seen trying to steal the Sun, while in Vietnam a giant frog was blamed.
It's important to note these mythological levels coexisted with religious and astronomical interpretations, with Indian astronomers developing mathematical explanations for eclipses as early as the 5th century.
