The Anjos Teixeira Gallery, located in Funchal, will open the exhibition "Arremendos" by visual artist Érica Gomes on September 17th at 7 PM.
Érica Gomes, born in Funchal in 2003, is a visual artist known for her constant experimentation, employing techniques such as photocopy, collage, sewing, and X-rays. Her work is based on the use of personal archives, which, when removed from their original context, gain a new collective dimension, prompting reflection on memory as a shared territory.
The artist explains that "Keeping a photograph is keeping a piece of something. A moment, a person, a place, but never the totality of what happened." The exhibition develops the connection between image and memory, exploring how photographs become a point of return when the original moment fades, and how memory is constructed from fragments, confronting what is missing from the image.
The concept of recreating memory based on photography is central, with the archive gaining new meanings by altering the relationships between images. The exhibition is curated by David Francisco.
