ARAE Warns of Illegality of CBD Foods in Madeira 'Smartshops'

The Regional Authority for Economic Activities (ARAE) has warned about the recurrence of the sale of cannabidiol (CBD) products in Madeira establishments, particularly in foodstuffs.

According to regional inspector Sónia Menezes, CBD is not an authorized novel foodstuff in the European Union, and there is no scientific validation for its safe use in human or animal food. An inspection, conducted with the Judicial Police, resulted in the identification of nine criminal offenses related to the genuineness, quality, or composition of foodstuffs and one concerning animal feed.

A total of 486 units of food products, estimated at 3,535.33 euros, were seized. ARAE emphasizes that while some establishments are legally permitted for their activities, selling CBD-infused foods is not allowed due to a lack of evidence regarding human health safety.
