The use of public transport as an alternative to private cars remains a topic of discussion in Madeira, particularly for those who work in Funchal and reside in other municipalities.
Issues such as schedules, journey times, and route frequency are central to this debate. Recently, a proposal emerged to create direct, fast connections between Machico, Santa Cruz, and Ribeira Brava and Funchal, including parking facilities and special passes.
However, Madeira's public transport network already offers routes that utilize the main highway. The Madeira Bus Company (CAM), for instance, has historically identified express services between Machico and Funchal, some designated 'Direct Express,' with high frequencies during certain times, especially in the mornings.
