Bazar do Povo: Historic Commercial Heritage Suffers Irreversible Changes

The Bazar do Povo, a historic commercial landmark in Funchal, is undergoing renovations that have resulted in the destruction of valuable decorative elements.

Madeira's traditional commerce faces significant challenges, with many historic shops being irreversibly altered, representing a loss to the island's history. The Bazar do Povo, one of Funchal's oldest establishments, is currently undergoing renovations that reportedly are destroying decorative elements considered valuable.

Photographs document the results of these transformations, including the removal of an altar on the first floor, once part of a founder's residence, to make way for storage shelves. This intervention raises concerns about the preservation of Madeira's commercial heritage.

The Bazar do Povo has a long history, beginning in 1890 when Henrique Augusto Rodrigues leased the space. Over the years, the store expanded and changed ownership, eventually being leased to Chinese entrepreneurs in 2012, leading to a significant transformation of the premises.
