The Bloco de Esquerda (BE) party will question the Ministry of Culture regarding the future of artist Lourdes Castro's house and studio in Caniço, which is currently on the market for 4.1 million euros. MP Andreia Galvão will present the inquiry, seeking to clarify the ministry's interest in the property and any planned actions to preserve this heritage.
The party is concerned about the property being placed on the real estate market without a defined public solution, given Lourdes Castro's artistic and cultural significance and her connection to Madeira. BE notes that the artist's house, studio, and garden have been identified as potential sites for a museum, cultural, and research center dedicated to her work.
Bloco states that despite contacts between the artist's heirs and the Ministry of Culture, no solution for the space's preservation has emerged yet. The party argues that such important heritage should not be reduced to a real estate opportunity, proposing the study of a public solution, potentially including a space for Lourdes Castro's work and contemporary artistic creation in Madeira.
