Caniçal celebrated a highlight of the Our Lady of Mercy Festival with its traditional maritime procession. The event attracted the local fishing community and numerous visitors on a sunny day with a gentle breeze.
Most of the tuna boats, many fully occupied, had already set sail. Parish priest Father Hélio Gomes highlighted the strong participation in this centuries-old tradition, which draws groups from various locations and organized excursions.
Considered a "nearly unique" tradition in the region, the maritime procession is led by the "Condor," the largest vessel. The Maritime Police ensure the organization of sea traffic. Father Hélio Gomes described the festival as an expression of "tradition, devotion, and faith," particularly felt by the fishing community. The image of Our Lady of Mercy will remain in Vila do Caniçal over the weekend before returning to its chapel.
