The Caniçal Commercial Port is set to receive a new investment of 27 million euros for the expansion of its platform and the rehabilitation of its main pier, under the Madeira 2030 program.
This announcement was made by Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government, during a visit to the new OPM cranes, which represent a 14 million euro investment and will double cargo handling capacity. Albuquerque highlighted a 35% increase in cargo unloaded in Madeira between 2020 and 2025, from 52,000 to approximately 72,000 containers annually, underscoring the need to enhance the operational capacity of the port, which handles 95% of the island's incoming cargo.
In addition to the new cranes and the ongoing platform expansion (a 10 million euro investment), the next phase will involve expanding the platform in the eastern part of the port and rehabilitating the main pier. The president also emphasized the use of cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence for container monitoring, to improve logistical and economic efficiency.
