New European Packaging Rules Could Impact Consumer Prices

The new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which came into effect on August 12, mandates companies to reconsider materials, formats, processes, and logistics, with potential impacts on final consumer prices.

The regulation aims to reduce waste, promote reuse, and improve recyclability. Companies face a phased timeline for changes over the coming years, including requirements for minimization, recyclability, and the incorporation of recycled materials.

Significant changes include allowing customers to bring their own containers in 2027 and requiring reusable options in 2028 for hotels, restaurants, and cafes. From 2030, single-use packaging for on-site consumption will be prohibited in restaurants, such as sachets for sauces and condiments.
