MEP Carla Tavares has warned of the risk of centralizing the management of European funds if the European Commission's proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) is approved. According to Tavares, the future model should not leave the involvement of local and regional authorities to the discretion of national governments.
During a debate on municipalities' access to European funds in Santa Cruz, the MEP criticized the proposal for eliminating individualized programs and concentrating funding in national and regional plans. Carla Tavares advocated for maintaining specific funds for Outermost Regions and preserving POSEI as a dedicated instrument.
Carla Tavares urged local mayors to pressure governments and actively participate in the debate on the future funding model, emphasizing the importance of European funds for local investment and the need to defend decentralization for more effective investment execution.
