The CHEGA councillor on Funchal Municipal Assembly, Luís Filipe Santos, has highlighted the urgency of the housing issue in the municipality. According to data from January 2026, there were 3,070 applications for social housing, of which 2,812 were active and awaiting allocation.
Santos emphasized that these numbers represent "people, families, children, the elderly" from Funchal who need a solution, calling for housing to be treated as an absolute priority. The councillor advocates not only for the construction of more housing but also for better management of existing housing stock and closer monitoring of residents in social housing neighborhoods.
With the Local Housing Strategy predicting around 300 new units by 2029, Luís Filipe Santos believes "much more" needs to be done to address the 2,812 active applications, advocating for construction, renovation, oversight, and the search for new solutions.
