CHEGA MP Francisco Gomes has accused the Republic's government of neglecting the defense of Portuguese families, criticizing the lack of public policies to support birth rates, maternity, and working families.
Gomes pointed out that the executive has voted against CHEGA's initiatives to protect families, such as priority access to daycare for children of working parents and tax benefits for families with two or more children. "The government talks a lot about family, but when it comes to voting on concrete measures to protect it, they reject them. It's an empty discourse," he stated.
The parliamentarian believes Portugal faces a serious demographic crisis and needs a national strategy to encourage birth rates and halt a "population replacement process." He also advocated for increased protection for pregnant women in the workplace, ensuring maternity is not a cause for discrimination.
