Chega Member of Parliament Francisco Gomes accused the Regional Government and Investimentos Habitacionais da Madeira (IHM) of keeping the Espírito Santo and Calçada neighbourhood, known as Bairro da Argentina, in a state of "prolonged abandonment".
"This neighbourhood is a reflection of a government that appears before elections, makes promises, asks for votes, and then disappears. This attitude is an insult," stated Gomes during a visit to the area. The MP reported finding serious conservation issues, including "degraded ceilings, lifted pavements, and severe leaks," and raised suspicions about the Regional Government's intentions for the area, fearing residents might be pressured to leave for private projects.
Gomes called for an urgent technical assessment of potential structural risks and criticized IHM for failing its maintenance responsibilities. "We are talking about the safety of families, not political propaganda," he emphasized, vowing that Chega would stand with the residents and ensure they are not forgotten.
