Chega Demands Immigration Control in Madeira and Denounces Housing Conditions in Caniço

Chega Member of Parliament Francisco Gomes has accused the Regional Government of promoting an "open doors" policy to supply cheap labor.

In a press release, the MP warned that uncontrolled immigration jeopardizes the region's safety, housing, and public services. The statements followed a visit to Caniço, where he denounced the illegal conversion of a commercial space into dormitory accommodation for foreign workers.

Chega also pointed to illegal construction, misuse of water, and occupation of common areas. Francisco Gomes held the Santa Cruz Municipal Chamber and the Caniço Parish Council responsible for allegedly ignoring the situation. The MP called for urgent inspections, action against illegal immigration, and accountability for employers.
