The Chega party's Machico branch has expressed solidarity with local fishermen following the seizure of 2,011 kilograms of meagretuna by the Maritime Authority in Caniçal.
The party is demanding the return of the fish to the owner, deeming the seizure unjust. Chega also criticized the timing of the operation, which occurred during the week of the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, calling it "in very poor taste" for the local fishing community.
Liliana Teixeira, the branch leader, stated that the party stands "with the fishermen" and advocates for the fish to be returned, calling for greater respect and justice for the sector, which is vital to the local economy and tradition.
