The Chega (CH) parliamentary group in the Assembly of the Republic has recommended that the Government of the Republic create a direct and regular air link between Madeira and South Africa.
This initiative, announced by Madeiran deputy Francisco Gomes, aims to strengthen mobility, bring the Madeiran diaspora closer, and enhance economic, cultural, and tourism relations between the two territories.
According to CH, the proposal addresses a long-standing demand from the Madeiran community, given the strong historical ties and a significant emigrant population in South Africa. The party argues that a regular air route would boost tourism and open new economic cooperation opportunities.
