The Public Security Police (PSP) are investigating a serious hit-and-run incident that occurred late yesterday afternoon in the municipality of Ribeira Brava.
Authorities are searching for the driver of the vehicle, who fled the scene without stopping to assist. The accident happened while a nine-year-old child and her mother were walking together and were struck by a car. The mother was evaluated at a health center, but the child suffered serious injuries, including suspected head trauma and injuries to the pelvis and lower limbs.
Emergency services were dispatched, including the PSP and the Volunteer Firefighters of Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol. A bystander transported the child to the local health center, from where she was transferred by a Portuguese Red Cross ambulance to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal. The child remains in serious condition.
The PSP's road accident investigation team is working to identify and locate the driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact the authorities.
