The Columbus Festival is returning to Porto Santo, with the 2026 edition kicking off this Thursday and running until September 20th.
The event, which recreates Christopher Columbus's passage through the island, aims to liven up the city center with a program of historical and cultural entertainment, expected to attract both residents and tourists. Locals view the festival as an important initiative for tourism and the island's economy, particularly as it takes place after the peak summer season.
Residents expressed optimism about the festival's impact. Aldónio Correia noted that the event "brings many people to Porto Santo," serving as an "initiative that brings back memories of the past and attracts many tourists." Patrícia Guerreiro added that "all initiatives that aim to bring more people to the island are always welcome," considering the festival "an event that does a lot of good for Porto Santo." João Leão highlighted the event's importance in extending the tourism season beyond August, stating it "brings a lot of activity to the island" at a time when "the August boom is already over."
