Cory's Shearwater Attracted by Ship's Light During Scientific Expedition in Madeira

During the Madeira Ocean 2026 Expedition, a Cory's Shearwater seabird was attracted by the artificial lighting of the ship Santa Maria Manuela.

Seabirds like the Cory's Shearwater normally use moonlight for nocturnal navigation and can become disoriented by artificial lights.

The bird was collected by the scientific team and will be transported to the Desertas Islands, where it will be cared for by the Institute for Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) before being released back into its natural habitat.
