A police operation and the installation of heavy equipment on Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas in Funchal disrupted the routine of residents and shopkeepers on Saturday morning. The movement of trucks and a crane vehicle required the authorities to organise the public space.
The work took place on a Saturday, when the traditionally pedestrian street sees less traffic. According to the report, municipal services also trimmed trees, both to allow the crane to operate and to prepare for Christmas decorations, creating a construction-site atmosphere.
Shopkeepers and passers-by complained of a lack of safety. On nearby Rua do Aljube, parking was prohibited for the tree pruning and decoration work, with warnings that vehicles would be towed, though the report notes many drivers ignored them.
