The Machico Municipal Council and the Insular Association of Geography (AIG), through the ECOS Machico project, have launched the Geodiversity Route in the Historic Center of Machico. The initiative coincides with International Geodiversity Day, celebrated on October 6th.
The route aligns with the 2026 theme, “Geodiversity On Our Doorstep,” aiming to emphasize the geodiversity present in the daily lives of communities. Its purpose is to promote the understanding and appreciation of non-living natural elements and their importance to societies.
This new resource offers a way to interpret the historic center, drawing attention to the geodiversity within the urban landscape and its connection to the city's development. It seeks to bring geodiversity closer to the community, making often-overlooked heritage more visible.
