Estrada dos Anjos repair set for 2029 as dispute over earlier study continues

The Regional Government says work on the Estrada dos Anjos in Ponta do Sol should start by 2029, while a dispute over a preliminary study remains unresolved.

The Regional Government has announced that the rehabilitation of the Estrada dos Anjos, in Ponta do Sol, should move forward by 2029. Regional President Miguel Albuquerque said the current municipal administration is developing studies and preparing the project, with financial support through a programme contract. The cost of the work and the date of the tender were not disclosed.

The responsibility for the project is disputed. Albuquerque said the project requested from the previous administration was never presented to him. Former mayor Célia Pessegueiro maintains that the council commissioned a preliminary study for the entire road in 2023, for 60,000 euros, delivered it in April 2025 and handed it to the regional secretary in May of that year.

The announced solution involves identifying the sections most exposed to rockfalls, defining protective structures and assessing the Anjos waterfall. Car access will be kept, though it may be affected, and a pedestrian and cycling route is planned between Ribeira Brava and Tabua. The cost, the fate of the earlier study and the timetable for construction remain unclear.
