The European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, recognized the need to modernize Madeira's black scabbard fish fleet. After visiting the Funchal fish market and engaging with industry professionals, Kadis suggested that European rules regarding fleet renewal may require revision.
"There is a real need to modernize the fleet," Kadis stated, acknowledging that current measures might not adequately address the specific needs of the Madeiran fleet. He highlighted the necessity for features better suited for long voyages, such as those undertaken by local fishermen, and did not rule out altering European regulations that impact fleet renewal.
The Regional Government of Madeira plans to allocate five million euros to support fleet modernization, aiming to replace current 18-meter vessels with 24-meter ones featuring more powerful engines. The regional black scabbard fish fleet currently comprises 23 operational vessels and provides employment for approximately 200 individuals.
