The Madeira Food Bank (BA) recorded a significant increase in food donations in 2025, receiving a total of 949 tons. This figure represents an increase of 31.5% compared to the previous year, translating to approximately 227 more tons of food.
Fruits and vegetables remained the main donation category, with 402.7 tons, accounting for 42.4% of the total. Bread and cereals followed, with 222.9 tons (23.5%). A notable surge was observed in the "other food products" category, which grew by 249.6% to reach 212.2 tons, playing a key role in the overall increase in donations.
Commerce, industry, and distribution were the largest contributors, responsible for 70.9% of donations. Food surpluses collected from commercial establishments accounted for over 83% of the total, aligning social response with food waste reduction. Madeira recorded 3.58 kilograms of food donated per inhabitant in 2025, exceeding the national average of 2.21 kilograms.
