Four road crashes in about an hour on the Via Rápida in Santa Cruz

Four vehicles left the road on the Via Rápida in Santa Cruz on All Saints' Day, after a day of heavy rain and an orange weather warning.

The Via Rápida in Santa Cruz recorded four road crashes in the late afternoon of today, All Saints' Day, within roughly one hour. The incidents followed a day of heavy rain and an orange weather warning due to bad weather.

According to the information available, all four vehicles left the road immediately after bends, raising suspicions that wet surfaces and reduced grip may have contributed. Santa Cruz firefighters were called to two of the incidents, and a recovery vehicle was dispatched to the scene.

Earlier in the afternoon, the same road had seen a rollover involving a passenger car near the Madeira Airport runway, in the Machico to Ribeira Brava direction. No information on injuries or the extent of material damage has been released so far.

Authorities urge drivers to take particular care, especially on winding stretches, reducing speed and keeping a greater safety distance given the adverse conditions. The IPMA had already upgraded the rain warning for Madeira to orange on Saturday.
