Chega Member of Parliament Francisco Gomes has advocated for regional autonomy to return to its intended purpose, serving the people of Madeira rather than "political and economic elites."
Gomes, speaking at the Chega-Madeira Autarkic Conference, stated that autonomy has been "distorted" over the past decade, becoming a tool for preserving power instead of benefiting the population.
He believes Madeira requires political renewal to end a system of "nepotism, favoritism, and lack of transparency," positioning Chega as an alternative focused on competence and regional interests.
