The People's Monarchist Party (PPM) of Madeira has reiterated its call for the urgent renewal of the regional fishing fleet, describing working conditions as "precarious" and "unsuited to the 21st century." The party has urged the Regional Government to implement measures to improve conditions for sector professionals.
According to the PPM, many vessels lack basic habitability conditions, such as adequate sanitary facilities, hot showers, or sufficient beds. Regional coordinator Paulo Brito emphasized that fishermen face long periods at sea, often between ten and fifteen days, in difficult conditions and far from their families.
The party argues that investment in renewing the fleet, which serves the tuna, black scabbardfish, and wreckfish fisheries, is crucial for improving safety, dignity, and working conditions. The PPM attributes the persistence of the problem to the "lack of responsibility and political interest" of previous governments, stressing the need to ensure minimum conditions for fishermen who supply the Region.
