Wildfires raging in southwestern France have intensified, with the Gironde department, near Bordeaux, becoming the main focus.
Authorities have ordered new precautionary evacuations due to the rapid spread of the flames, which have already consumed approximately 19,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of over 140,000 people, including residents and tourists. The fire, which started in Saumos, is advancing towards populated and tourist areas, such as the Cap Ferret peninsula and Bordeaux suburbs.
Hundreds of firefighters, supported by aerial resources and international reinforcements, including from Portugal, are battling the flames. Adverse weather conditions, including heat, low humidity, and wind, are hindering firefighting efforts and increasing the risk of flare-ups.
Other fire outbreaks persist across France, amidst a summer marked by extreme heatwaves. The situation mirrors wildfires in Spain and Southern Europe. Authorities are prioritizing the protection of human lives and containing the fire's advance, acknowledging the possibility of further evacuations.
