Funchal Diocesan Cáritas has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Professor Eugénio José da Cruz Fonseca, who died on August 12 at the age of 69.
Eugénio Fonseca was a prominent figure in social intervention in Portugal, dedicating over four decades to community service, with a particular focus on vulnerable individuals and the defense of human dignity. He served as president of Setúbal Diocesan Cáritas (1987-2016) and Cáritas Portuguesa (1999-2020), and also chaired the Portuguese Confederation of Volunteering since 2009.
A graduate in Religious Sciences, he was involved in various social and civic participation structures, including the Economic and Social Council and the National Commission for Guaranteed Minimum Income. Throughout his career, he became a recognized voice advocating for those facing poverty and social exclusion.
