Funchal's municipal council unanimously approved on Wednesday, 28 October, the start of a review of its Municipal Regulation on Waste Management, Urban Cleaning and Polluting Behaviour.
The aim is to update municipal rules and bring them in line with current legislation and the city's present needs. Mayor Jorge Carvalho described the decision as one of the most significant of the meeting, stressing the need to modernise a regulation more than two decades old.
The proposal, presented by councillor Paula Jardim Duarte, will cover waste disposal and collection rules, clearer responsibilities for those involved, and an update to the penalty regime, including fine amounts.
The council will now draft a regulation, which will be submitted to the municipal executive and to public consultation.
