Independent councillor in Funchal Municipal Chamber, Luís Filipe Santos, has called for a rigorous evaluation of the new road circulation changes in the city center, including the creation of BUS lanes.
Santos does not oppose prioritizing public transport but deems it essential to verify if the measures will make buses faster and more regular without creating new traffic problems. He argues that a modern mobility policy must go beyond painting lanes and altering directions, assessing the impact on pedestrians, residents, commerce, and general traffic.
The councillor specifically questions the prohibition of pedestrian circulation on Ponte do Pelourinho and the elimination of parking on Rua da Infância, requesting technical justifications and alternatives. Santos advocates for the Municipal Chamber to commit to monitoring results with objective indicators and correcting any issues, while effectively communicating the changes to the public.
