Chega MP Francisco Gomes has harshly criticized the visit of the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, to Madeira, stating it should be his "last official act as Minister." Gomes alleges that the minister has brought "shame" to the country and security forces.
The criticisms focus on the alleged lack of solutions for problems within the Madeira PSP, such as labor abuses, imposition of paid duties, disregard for days off, and psychological pressure on officers. The MP also points to a chronic shortage of personnel and difficulties for Madeiran officers transferring from the mainland to the island.
Gomes further criticized the "progressive abandonment of road and community policing," citing shifts with few officers and vast patrol areas. He accuses the PSP leadership and the ministry of incompetence and of failing to defend officers, despite long-standing awareness of the issues.
