The Autonomous Region of Madeira, along with the Azores, could see its autonomy in managing European funds diminished due to a proposed revision of the European Union's Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034.
Currently, the regions have regional programmes and managing authorities that direct structural funding towards local priorities, such as the Madeira 2030 programme, which supports projects in areas like business competitiveness, innovation, employment, social inclusion, housing, environment, and renewable energy.
The European Commission's new proposal plans to replace the current structure with a single National and Regional Partnership Plan for each member state. This change would integrate funds from various policies (cohesion, agriculture, fisheries, social programmes, etc.) into one national framework, aiming to simplify access, reduce the number of programmes, and increase flexibility in response to changing economic, social, or geopolitical circumstances. The plans are still under negotiation and have not been finalized.
