Funchal is experiencing a growth of over 25% in the use of its public electric vehicle charging network, amidst a strong expansion of electric mobility in Portugal. Despite this positive evolution, Madeira continues to show lower availability of charging points per inhabitant compared to the mainland average.
Data presented by Sílvia Amaral, an administrator at Mobi.E, indicates that the public network in Madeira currently has 128 posts, totaling 227 charging points, with about 32% being fast chargers. Over half of the region's parishes (55.6%) already have public charging infrastructure. However, the regional average is five charging points per 10,000 inhabitants, compared to eight on the mainland.
Network usage has been increasing significantly, mirroring the national trend of strong electric mobility expansion, with electric vehicle sales growing by 40% in Portugal in the first half of the year. The profile of tourists, often younger and more inclined to use electric vehicles, also contributes to the increased network usage on the island.
