The Funchal Marine Biology Station will hold its final Open Night of the year on September 25th, dedicated to the sea turtles found in the island's waters.
The event, which takes place annually during the summer, includes a guided tour of the Station at 8:00 PM (reservations mandatory) and a lecture at 9:30 PM. The lecture, titled "Sea Turtles in Madeira: What We Have Learned, What We Still Don't Know, and Why We Need to Protect Them," will be presented by Thomas Dëllinger, a professor at the University of Madeira.
The session will cover the importance of Madeiran waters as a habitat for juvenile turtles, particularly the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), and over three decades of research into their origins, feeding habits, navigation, and threats. The recovery work by OKEAM will also be highlighted.
