The Funchal City Council marked World Alzheimer's Day with an information session themed 'Preventing Dementia: What Do We Really Know in 2026?'. The initiative, held in partnership with the Madeira branch of the Alzheimer Portugal Association, took place in the Municipal Assembly Hall.
At the opening, Councillor for Health, Helena Leal, highlighted that dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, is a growing challenge in a society with increased life expectancy. Alzheimer's, accounting for approximately 60-70% of dementia cases, has a significant emotional and social impact on families, making intervention in treatment, support, and prevention crucial.
Leal noted that, according to the World Health Organization, up to 45% of dementia risk could be prevented or delayed by addressing modifiable factors such as physical activity, hypertension and diabetes control, diet, smoking, and social isolation. She emphasized the role of community centers, municipal gyms, and the Senior University in promoting autonomy and active aging, and acknowledged the importance of supporting caregivers.
The event featured speakers Lucília Nóbrega (Alzheimer Portugal Association) and psychologist Helena Andrade, moderated by Paulo Milheiro (Funchal City Council). The Council reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Regional Government, associations, and professionals for a healthier and more inclusive city.
