The Mayor of Funchal (CMF), Jorge Carvalho, stated that discharges recorded at Gorgulho–Gavinas beach likely originate from residential homes.
This statement follows an announcement by the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party that they would seek clarification regarding two discharges observed in the bathing area within a 15-day period, citing concerns about water quality and public health.
Carvalho explained that identifying the exact source of all discharges is challenging despite inspections, but current data points towards homes rather than nearby hotels, which he noted are complying with regulations. The municipality continues to monitor the situation to determine the origin and prevent future incidents.
