The annual celebration of Funchal Port Day, traditionally marked on July 18th in memory of the 1962 expansion, was anticipated this year.
The early date is due to the Regional Final of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal taking place at Praça do Povo, from 3 PM to 7 PM, with television broadcast.
In 2015, Miguel Albuquerque promised the expansion of Funchal Port as an important project, but stated it was not part of the government's current program, to be presented for the next term. Eleven years have passed since that promise, and the work remains in the study phase.
