Funchal's WWI memorial unveiled again after restoration, in time for Armistice Day

The Avenue of the Sea monument in Funchal has been unveiled after a second restoration phase, in time for the Armistice commemorations.

The Monument to the Dead of the Great War (1914-1918), by sculptor Francisco Franco, on the Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses in Funchal, has finally been unveiled this week, in time for the Armistice commemorations.

The second restoration phase, begun on 13 July 2026 at the initiative of the Funchal City Council, included treatment of the stone base quarried in Porto Santo, conservation of the metal chains, cleaning of the commemorative plaques and repair of the cross at the top. According to the same source, it remains unclear whether the bronze wreath, which was stolen, will be replaced in time.

Official military ceremonies on 11 November, marking the 108th anniversary of the Armistice and the 52nd anniversary of the end of the Overseas War, will take place beside the monument, with tributes and the laying of flowers.
