Funchal will host the Madeira International Bird Exhibition II (MIBE II) in 2026, an international ornithological exhibition organized by the Madeira Ornithological Association (AOM). The event, co-organized with the Portuguese National Ornithological Federation (FONP) and supported by the World Ornithological Confederation (COM) and the Municipality of Funchal, is scheduled for October 23-25, 2026, at the Pavilhão dos Trabalhadores.
The exhibition is expected to feature around 1,700 birds, a record number following the success of the first edition in 2024. Approximately 1,000 birds will come from mainland Portugal, and 126 breeders from various regions of Portugal, including Madeira and the Azores, as well as Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands, have already registered.
Councilwoman Helena Leal emphasized the event's significance for Funchal's international profile in ornithology, noting its growth and scale. She also highlighted the economic, tourism, cultural, educational, and social benefits of the initiative, which aims to bring the public closer to ornithology.
