Driver Giandomenico Basso had to abandon the Madeira Rally after sustaining spinal compression during the landing of a jump on stage PEC3 Palheiro Ferreiro.
The team attempted to keep the driver in the race with physiotherapy and medication, but the injury worsened in a fast section of PEC6 Santana, forcing withdrawal. Examinations at CUF Hospital confirmed a fracture in the D4 vertebra.
Basso will be unable to practice any sport for the next three months. The team admitted that the initial objective was to win the event.
