The Regional Government of Madeira has reached an agreement with the heir of Lourdes de Castro to purchase the house where the artist lived and worked in Caniço for three million euros. The property, previously listed for 4.1 million euros, will be transformed into a House-Museum.
The agreement also extends the loan of artworks from Lourdes de Castro's collection to the MUDAS – Museum of Contemporary Art of Madeira, from five to 15 years. Documentation related to the artist's estate, including correspondence and diaries, will be integrated into the future museum. The space will feature areas for exhibitions, artistic residencies, and art education activities.
The acquisition process is expected to be completed in October. The property valuation took into account technical and financial opinions. The aim is to preserve the house, the artistic and documentary collection, and Lourdes de Castro's connection to Madeira, establishing a cultural and museological function for the space.
