The Chega parliamentary group in the Assembly of the Republic has proposed a draft resolution recommending the government promote the recognition and safeguarding of traditional knowledge and practices associated with black scabbardfish fishing in Madeira.
The initiative aims for the inscription of this activity in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, preserving a tradition linked to the maritime history of the region, documented since the 19th century and strongly connected to Câmara de Lobos.
Madeiran deputy Francisco Gomes highlighted the importance of preserving knowledge, vocabulary, and techniques passed down through generations, considering fishermen "guardians of knowledge" and that the loss of this expertise would represent the disappearance of "an irreplaceable part of Madeira's history."
