The People's Monarchist Party (PPM) of Madeira has expressed concern regarding the state of conservation of São Tiago Fort in Funchal.
Following a visit to the exterior of the monument, the party reported observing signs of degradation, including the poor condition of a wall and the destruction of a guardhouse. The PPM advocates for a "thorough restoration" of the property and its revaluation as a museum space, arguing that the fort should be "returned to the citizens" and its historical role in defending the island against corsair attacks should be recreated.
The party also questions the current restaurant operation at the site, suggesting that establishing a museum dedicated to the fort's history would better utilize its tourist and cultural potential.
