The President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, Rubina Leal, has put forward the challenge for Madeira Embroidery to be nominated for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Leal argued that this centuries-old art form possesses historical, cultural, and identity value that warrants international recognition and protection. The announcement came during a session where the Legislative Assembly, acting as an Ambassador for Madeira Embroidery, hosted an artistic installation.
The President praised the work of over 600 embroiderers who keep this tradition alive, a skill passed down through generations and deeply connected to the island's history. The UNESCO candidacy would represent a new step in enhancing the value and international projection of this Madeiran heritage.
