The island of Madeira serves as inspiration for an exhibition of contemporary Portuguese design in Shanghai, China. The show, "Not a Love Story – A Journey Through Portuguese Contemporary Design," features 12 national brands of high-end furniture and decor.
The event, held at Cimen Mall until October 7th, aims to present the Portuguese offering in the Chinese market in an integrated manner, as it is usually dispersed. The exhibition path is organized into several spaces recreating scenes inspired by Lisbon, Madeira, and the Algarve, following a couple's narrative.
Huang Liu, China representative for the lighting brand Serip and one of the coordinators, emphasized the importance of showcasing the "quantity and variety" of Portuguese products, which remain "quite dispersed" in the Chinese market. The initiative arises in a context of demand for higher quality products, with Portuguese brands focusing on design, materials, sustainability, and national identity.
