The historical novel "1566", authored by Horácio B. Gouveia, will be launched at the Funchal Municipal Theatre on July 10th at 6:00 PM.
The work depicts the attack by French corsairs, led by Bertrand de Montluc, on Funchal, a significant event in the island's history. The narrative transports the reader to 16th-century Funchal, a growing city with around eight thousand inhabitants and approximately three thousand slaves, during a period marked by social inequalities, economic dependence, and military threats.
Through the character Afonso Ayres da Câmara, one of the island's wealthiest landowners, the novel explores family life, the defense of heritage, political instability, and the violence that left a mark on Madeiran collective memory. Horácio B. Gouveia, a law graduate, resides in Madeira and is the son of writer Horácio Bento de Gouveia. Francisco Fernandes will present the book.
