IFCN maintains high forest fire risk alert until July 7

The Institute for Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) has maintained the alert for a high risk of forest fire in Madeira. This decision follows the extension of the hot weather warning issued by the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which is in effect until Tuesday, July 7.

The island's mountainous regions remain at high risk. The IFCN urges the public to exercise caution and responsibility when using forest areas to prevent dangerous situations. Negligent behavior is a primary cause of fires, and bonfires, burning, and the use of stoves in forest leisure areas are prohibited.

It is recommended to avoid using equipment that can generate sparks in rural areas, such as brush cutters and chainsaws. Camping in forest areas is also discouraged. Hikers on classified trails should take extra precautions due to the risk of dehydration and heatstroke. The road between Pico do Areeiro and Eira do Serrado remains closed for safety reasons. In case of emergency, contact 112.
