Iniciativa Liberal (IL) marked International Youth Day by calling for conditions that allow young people to remain in Madeira. The party advocates for changes in housing, employment, taxation, and economic growth, highlighting the region's youth population decline and difficulties in accessing housing and qualified jobs.
According to IL, in 2025, those under 15 represented only 11.7% of the resident population, with around 6,000 young people aged 16-34 unemployed, not studying, or in training. Deputy Gonçalo Maia Camelo believes Madeira should not be a region where young people are forced to leave for better living conditions.
Housing is a major concern, with average sale prices reaching €3,762 per square meter in July 2026 and rentals at €16.2 per square meter. IL also proposes tax reductions, increased private investment, less bureaucracy, and an economy generating skilled jobs and higher wages to reverse youth emigration trends.
