Insurer contests €1 million claim by family of Glória Funicular crash victim

Fidelidade says the amount sought by the family of one of 16 victims killed in the Lisbon derailment is excessive.

Insurer Fidelidade has challenged, before the Lisbon Administrative Court, a claim of about one million euros filed by the family of Ana Paula Lopes, one of 16 people killed in the derailment of the Glória Funicular in Lisbon.

The family seeks €1.05 million from Carris, Fidelidade and MNTC, including €125,000 as compensation for the loss of the right to life. The insurer calls the sum disproportionate, citing earlier court rulings and incidents on the line since 2018.

Fidelidade says it has not refused compensation and states it has offered "several hundred thousand euros" to the family. Of the 16 cases, four have been settled and eight are under negotiation.

The Lisbon city council criticised the insurer's position. The final decision depends on the courts and the findings of the public prosecutor.
